Outstanding Teachers

Our highly trained Early Intervention teachers support all children so that they achieve to their highest potential. These dedicated Early Intervention teachers work with children who have special needs on a one-to-one basis for part of every day, promoting their strengths and interests.

Individual Programmes

Every child follows a teaching programme that meets his or her unique needs and abilities. This programme is developed by a team of professionals working closely with the child's family/whanau.

Sign language

In addition to appropriate, non-discriminatory language, our staff uses Makaton sign language to aid clear communication.

Assessment

Assessment of children at Te Akonga takes place within the context of meaningful activities and relationships. It encompasses all dimensions of children?s learning and development and focuses on their strengths and interests.

 

Family Support

Staff are on site and available to support and encourage parents each day. The centre offers a well equipped parent library and monthly parent support group meetings.

Enrolling

The Te Akonga Early Childhood Centre is open to children from birth to school age. Children with special needs have priority on the waiting list and are most often able to be enrolled immediately.

Hours

The centre is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm, during school terms. Children can either attend the whole-day sessions or two or more half-day sessions, running from 9am to noon or 12.30 to 3.00pm. We also run holiday programmes.

Community based

The Te Akonga Early Childhood Centre is a community based, non-profit organisation. We?ve been operating since 1989.
